Upon Morthos’ return you enter the temple. A wide hall runs from the portico entrance to the back wall, bisecting the structure. The ceiling rises fully 20 feet above a central row of columns, each encircled with scrawling text.
Shafts of moonlight lance down from gaps in the stone roof above, illuminating a bas-relief of a skeletal dragon sculpted into the wall at the end of the hallway. The dragon is shown in victorious battle against a horde of demons, rising like a swarm of locusts from the caldera of a raging volcano.
Sejik carefully examines of the bas-relief which reveals a small structure in the lower right corner that resembles a half-completed Temple of Kha’shazul. The temple portico, which forms the ceiling of the dragons’ hoard chamber, was the last element to be added. The bas-relief depicts a great cavern where the portico now stands, hinting at the existence of the dragons’ lair below.
Just then Taveah hears a door slam down the corridor to the left. She peers through darkness and sees a large lizardlike shadow race toward a larger chamber at the corridors edge.
“Another blackscale down here!” she shouts.
You move quickly through the corridor, but careful to avoid detection. Kirin conjures an engulfing aura of darkness around you as you reach the edge of the corridor. You cautiously survey the room under the cloak of darkness.
Moonlight streams in from the high windows of this vaulted chamber, illuminating a circular well bordered by a low bloodstained wall. Rusty iron cages are set into the far wall, while the others bear bas-relief sculptures that illustrate the macabre rites that must have once taken place here. If the images on the walls are to be believed, creatures were held within these cages and dropped into the central well. Below, a great skeletal dragon would feast on them.
|The circular well in the middle of the chamber drops 20 feet straight down and appears to end in a solid stone floor._
Several Blackscale lizardfolk surround the well. One of them is unlike the more primitive-looking blackscale lizardfolk. This specimen wears an ornate breastplate engraved with draconic imagery.
_On the far side of the room, a large constrictor snake slides along the cold granite floor guarding a rear hallway.
Under the magical aura of darkness you make your attack. Kohl crushes the skull of the nearest Blackscale without warning. It drops instantly. The breastplated shaman hisses in surprise, but is unable to react in time.
You focus your attacks on the creature. It falls to the ground in a bloody mess. Its lifeless eyes stare back at you, almost if in disbelief that it had died so abruptly.
In draconic, a remaining blackscale shouts, “Death for the Black Lord Rhashaak!” and pulls a wooden lever in the wall. A faint clanging can be heard in the distance.
You engage the remaining enemies in battle. The blackscale are quickly dispatched. Morthos moves to the far end of the room to attack the constrictor.
Suddenly the drake returns. It springs forth from the well with a terrifying shriek. You ready your attack against it, however, a strange black mist begins to enshroud the creature. Before you realize it, the mist spreads across the room engulfing you in darkness. Taveah takes to the western wall, Kirin to the east. Sejik and Kohl remain with Miklos unable to see their prey but know it is near.
Claws and teeth snatch at each you as you stumble through the darkness. Many of you are injured. Morthos, by sheer luck avoids the blinding mist, but his troubles have also just begun.
The constrictor snatches him by the leg and works its way up his body. He tries to break loose but is unable. It tightens its grip. Morthos gasps. His chest crushing inwards. Somehow, Morthos works his dagger free and stabs the snake, jarring it from its grasp. His lungs rush with air and he throws the snake off of him. Taveah and Kirin emerge from the darkness and find Morthos. She rushes to his aid.
The constrictor seeing its new target strikes. It wraps around Taveah in a deathgrip unlike no other. Taveah tries to scream but the constrictor steals her breath. Morthos and Kirin attack. The serpent relents and falls dead.
Just then, the dark mist evaporates revealing the drake. Now vulnerable to attack, it dives back down the well which seals shut behind it.
