“Kohl! Miklos! Quickly this way!”
The cloaked quarry barrels through the dark alleys, but Taveah keeps the figure in her sight. As she races through the cobbled maze, she is reminded of the many cat and mouse games she played as a child.
“Run from me will you? Let’s see how fast you really are.”
“She’s a fast one isn’t she?” Miklos pants.
“I’ve never bested her, though this armor isn’t helping.” Kohl grumbles.
They watch as she darts down another corner.
Taveah closes in on her target, but he zigs down another alley which opens into the chaotic sprawl of the Pirate Exchange. The bazaar is filled with vendors hawking their wares to passersby. The cloaked figure leaps atop wooden beams which hold the canopies of the market stalls and races above and across the market square effortlessly.
Taveah leaps atop a nearby beam and continues to give chase. Her tracker looks back and nearly stumbles from the double take, amazed at her pursuit.
“Watch your step, friend!” she yells out mockingly.
The quarry doubles its efforts, grapples a series of lattice work along the wall and climbs to the rooftops. Taveah eyes her target as it reaches the top and scrambles along the shingles. She hurriedly makes her way to the climbing point and reaches the roofs.
“There she is!” Kohl points.
Kohl pulls his ax and follows their lead. “Clear the way!”
Lhazaar merchants and buyers quickly part out of the way as Kohl and Miklos charge forward. Midway through the Exchange, an elderly gnomish woman with blue salamander in her hands yelps as Miklos crashes into her. The blue lizard is tossed into the air. The woman tumbles to the floor with Miklos atop her.
“Thief! Pervert! Get off me you swine! Guards!” she cries.
“My apologies, mada…. uuuummm!”
Taveah and the runner continue their sprint along the gabled rooftops leaping from one to the next. As she reaches the peak of the next slope, she catches the silhouette of two patrolling Seadragon archers on the roofs to her left. She ducks behind a chimney as they peer in her direction. Her back slams hard against the brick. She looks for her quarry. Her target must have also spotted them, either that or fell to streets below and lay there with a broken neck.
“Wishful thinking.” she mutters.
She watches over her shoulder as the patrol resumes it’s route. The brittle sound of shingles crack nearby. Her quarry seizes the opportunity and resumes it’s frenzied run.
“There you are!”
Taveah pursues. Her heart and lungs burst for air as she increases her run to catch up to her prey.
“I cannot see them anymore Kohl. Are you sure the militia know where they are going?” Miklos shouts while panting for air.
“Listen cousin, it make’s no sense for us to travel to Port Verge. It is dangerous. The Emerald Claw are known to truck with Prince Kolberkon. Regalport was the right decision.”
“Kirin, Kohl is useful. You need to have more patience. This isn’t one of your simple hijacks you and Morthos normally take on. There are greater forces at work here. Forces we do not yet understand.”
“Hmm… perhaps. Where is that tiefling anyhow?”
A shout is heard from the dock house up ahead. Kirin and Sejik follow their ears and see a dark figure leap from atop a roof and tumble gracefully to the street below. The runner leaps up to its feet and races down the wooden dock.
“What’s this?” Kirin asks.
Taveah is then seen leaping from the roof as well. The situation is immediately apprised.
“Stop him Kirin, quickly!” Sejik shouts.
Kirin hurls a dagger from his boot. It sings through the night air and strikes the runner deep in the back of the left thigh. Cloak and leather tumble to wooden floor. Taveah races to the fallen prey. As she nears, she sees the face of a man. He winces in agony from the pain. She stares at him with a puzzled look.
“Only Human? I would’ve thought you something more.”
Moments later the Seadragon militia along with Kohl and Miklos arrive. After a brief explanation of the events and the subtle plying of information from the spy, you learn that he is an agent of the Emerald Claw who relayed the information you obtained about the journal to Dura via sending stone. Her ship has already left Regalport.
Sejik rallies the group. “Quickly, we must set sail immediately before Dura and the Order retrieve that journal.”
