You carefully make your way back into the main hall and decide to investigate the room. The pillars along the center of the room are etched in draconic markings detailing the accounts of the great dragon Kha’shazul and his defeat of the Khyber demon lords. To the north, the room ends with another hallway that turns to the right in an easternly direction.
After a brief search of the area, Morthos notices 2 secret doors; one in the northwest corner of the room and one in the southeast. Each door is clearly activated by pressure plates in the floor.
The northwest door makes its way back to the Sacrificial Chamber (by way of yet another secret door) while the other opens into another hallway which curiously deadends some 20 or 30ft ahead. Morthos, enters the hall and upon reaching its end also sees signs of another pressure plate.
“You think you can secure this plate? I don’t want anything coming through it and possibly flanking us after we make our way down the eastern hall.”
“No problem, Morthos. I got this.” Miklos confidently responds.
With a piton and a bit of hammering Miklos makes quick work of the contraption.
“That should do it.” he smiles.
“Perhaps the gnome may be of help yet.” he thinks.
Having secured your backs, you make your way down the eastern hall. Kirin, however, decides to leave his owl behind to keep watch. It takes to the air and perches itself near the top of a pillar.
As you move down the hall, you pass a small alcove. Morthos, scouts ahead to the end of the hall and peers into the adjoining room.
A massive altar dominates the far wall, a mural behind it stretching all the way to the chamber’s vaulted ceiling. This mural depicts a massive black dragon perched atop an active volcano, the glow of molten lava reflected in the red of the beast’s eyes. The bodies of demons litter the base of the volcano, while other fiendish creatures can be seen trapped within it.
A low circular wall surrounds a well in the center of the room. An open archway in the wall opposite the altar appears to lead to a vestry.
Within the altar room are several lizardfolk engaged in some ritual involving incense and a chorus of hissing. The lizard in the center, their chieftan, wears a gold inlaid chasuble over his robes, and appears to be leading the creatures in ceremony.
Morthos hatches a plan and decides he will draw the enemy into the hall while Kohl and Taveah will lie in wait in the alcove. The remainder of the group will wait in the shadows near the main hall. Once they pass the alcove, you will launch your attack.
Once each of you are all in position, Morthos makes his move.
As Morthos edges along the corridor, dark shapes suddenly spring from the shadows, a flash of steel glints in their scaly hands. They are blackscale assassins.
“Enemies, my lord!” they shout in draconic.
The assassins attack, but Morthos is quick to move and avoids critical injury.
“Its a trap!” Morthos yells and races back down the hall towards you.
From across the chamber, the Chieftan and two lizardfolk give chase. As they reach the alcove, the Chieftan spots the steely shine of Kohl’s armor in the moonlight. Your surprise is foiled.
The Chieftan swings his blade towards Kohl, but misses.
“We are seen! Quickly attack!” Kohl yells.
Kirin is quick to respond and launches a torrent of energy from his blade. The Chieftan is hit, flames lick its scaled hide. It hisses in anger and orders its men to attack.
Kirin is then alerted by her owl. Lizardmen enter the hall. Miklos’ piton failed. Their tongues lash at the air for the scent of prey.
“The secret door! Blasted Miklos, you… ! We are flanked!” Kirin yells.
Suddenly the blackscale assassins again appear out of the shadows and deliver sneak attacks before disappearing back into nothingness.
“I am hit!” Kirin yells, “Watch the shadows!”
Two more lizardmen, engage Sejik and Morthos. The tiefling and human fight desperately side by side. Bruised and blood soaked they manage to cut down one of the attackers then turn their focus on the other.
Meanwhile Kohl, Taveah and her wolf battle the Chieftan. Skarn attacks first, biting into the Chieftan. The Chieftan hisses in pain and buries it’s axe deep in the hind quarter of Skarn. It yelps as its thrown against the wall.
“You will pay for that!” Taveah screams and slams her spear through the Chieftan’s leg.
Kohl assists in her vengeful attack, striking a fatal blow on the Chieftan.
The Chieftan falls to the floor and gasps its final warning. “Vengeancsse will be oursss. Rassshaak will devour… your sssssoulsss.”
“Perhaps, but you will not live to see that day.” says Kohl as he delivers the final blow.
With the death of the Chieftan, the remaining lizardmen quickly fall. You are all tired and bloodied, but triumphant.
